The Eastern Screech Owl (Megascops asio) is a small, stocky owl native to eastern North America, typically measuring 6–10 inches in length with distinctive ear tufts and large yellow eyes. Its plumage comes in two main color morphs, gray and reddish-brown (rufous), both patterned with intricate streaks and mottling that provide excellent camouflage against tree bark. Despite its name, this owl doesn't actually screech—its most common calls are a descending, horse-like whinny and a soft, even-pitched trill. Highly adaptable, it thrives in a variety of wooded habitats, including forests, parks, and suburban areas, nesting in tree cavities or nest boxes. As a nocturnal predator, it hunts a wide range of prey, from insects and small mammals to birds, reptiles, and amphibians, using its silent flight and keen hearing to locate targets in the dark.
