My initial intension with ‘Dryad’ was to create a piece that expressed pregnancy, birthing and the feminine. It took me by surprise when the piece was not necessarily about pregnancy in a usual pregnancy pose (although nothing suggests contrary that she may not be pregnant), but poised with such radiant expression of beauty and connection to an energy very sacred to life. ‘Dryad’s’ stance, draping cloth over her feminine features and stability suggested to me that she was encased in this very sacred holding, like been held in union with the tree she came from. From Greek myth (Dryad), a female tree spirit. At the time of creating ‘Dryad’, I had a two week gestation period of deeply connecting to an overshadowed aspect of my being. I felt guided to stay with this feeling, vulnerable yet trusting. On a particular day of sculpting, and filming, I noticed a deep holding of me. A presence of a spiritual force. I was able to surrender to trust. Feelings began welling up inside, soon to start weeping and this was very unusual for me. ‘Dryad’ connects to a magic in a very different form to any other piece I’ve created. Her poise and grace I felt inside of me and all around me.
