A member of the “royal family of the American stage,” Lionel Barrymore (1878-1954) was not only a gifted actor, but an artist as well. Every moment that he was not acting, Barrymore would sketch, his favorite subject being the sea and its waterfronts. During his lifetime, Barrymore never received recognition for his sketches and paintings; only after his death did the public come to realize what a great artistic talent he was.
