The boatman (known as Charon by some) moves smoothly between worlds. Each dwelling houses a unique universe. We can gain access to other worlds through imagination driven dreams. The Boatman provides the viewer with a powerful image to begin slipping into the painting (and thus into other states of consciousness) with a frictionless equilibrium.
