MessageI was born in 1948, in Palo Alto, California. Both my parents were scientists who worked for NASA, and together they did the pioneering work that led to the swept-back wing design that makes jet travel possible.
All of my life I've had equal passions for jazz and modern art.
I've been drawing and painting since I was 12, when I first saw an abstract painting by Jasper Johns.
I've also been influenced by Robert Rauschenberg, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly and Richard Gayton, (my drawing teacher at The California College of Art). My drive is for new and dynamic color interaction; an active, energetic composition; and an integrity that keeps the painting alive and engaging, even after you've seen it for many years.
I've sold approximately 400 paintings and drawings, and have taught drawing, painting and color theory for young and old. I've taught drawing and painting to “youth at risk” in the Mississippi Delta and public school teachers how to teach their students art.
My work is in private and corporate contemporary art collections around the world. Over the past 50 years I've shown my work in approximately 40 one-man and group gallery shows.
I love abstract art because when it’s good it can uplift and put the viewer in touch with who they are beyond their language, culture, psychology, history or personality.
I also enjoy playing my saxophone in the Melbourne, FL area. You can hear what I sound like on my Dave's Jazz website and SoundCloud, where I've posted 70+ original jazz compositions. I welcome your comments!
