In every generation that Black women have lived on the "American" continent, there have been those in the community who fought for our freedoms. He saw them throughout his time in Boston, where he lived until 2004.
Because Chandler has a great deal of respect for these women—who include "every day" women like his late mother to community leaders like the late Elma Lewis and her contemporaries—he painted this work in honor of them. "They had as significant an influence on me and my family as they did on the public," he remembers. "Their influence is still felt today."
