Chandler says that in this painting, the woman also is saying, primarily to White men, "And there's nothing you can do to get me."
"This references all Women of Color, but it represents Black women, specifically," he says.
Chandler is remembering multiple conversations he had with his sisters and other women in the 60s and 70s about White men 'hitting' on them in and outside of corporate spaces. It was in the first time in American history Black women could deny access to their bodies without dangerous, even deadly, consequences—at least most times—though he recognizes sexual harassment remains an issue. But being able to exercise their agency over their body was liberating for them.
