Fountain has been painted using oil and acrylic on canvas and was created especially for my exhibition Endless Summer at Saltdean Lido, part of Brighton’s Artists Open Houses Coastal Trail.
I found an old black-and-white image of a fountain from the Butlin’s resort in Skegness and instantly fell in love with it. In the 50s and 60s, these decorative fountains were scattered across holiday resorts - adding a little extra glamour, theatre, and magic to our leisure time.
Fountain is my celebration of that eccentric British seaside spirit: how something as simple as a fountain can become completely enchanting when seen through the eyes of a holidaymaker. It’s kitsch, it’s playful, and it makes me smile. I loved painting the splashes and the energy, capturing the sheer thrill of being in the water - and the simple, contagious happiness of it all.
