Lancing-based painter Ruth Mulvie creates wild, fanciful dreamscapes where maximalism and colour converge in a dopamine effect, and playful distortion meets joyful escape. In her world, tigers lap at swimming pools while pelicans and people gather beneath dayglow skies.
After completing her BA Hons in Painting at Glasgow School of Art in 2002, Ruth continued to produce work prolifically while working in galleries and as an art teacher before moving to painting full-time. She has since exhibited her work globally, with shows from Brighton to Belgium and London to Los Angeles, and her collectors span the world.
Ruth’s recent exhibition at Saltdean Lido, Endless Summer, was featured on BBC News, attracting wide attention for her vibrant, joyful visions of leisure, nostalgia and freedom.
Ruth’s process is a blend of considered composition and playful spontaneity. She works slowly across several large canvases at a time, digitally mapping out her increasingly complex compositions before underpainting in acrylic and high-flow ink. Her vivid colour palette is a puzzle solved in the moment, lending her work its unmistakable vibrancy and warmth.
Alongside original paintings, Ruth offers a range of highly sought-after limited edition prints. Whether it’s a retro lido scene, a shimmering nightscape or a sun-drenched hideaway, Ruth’s art captures the spirit of escape and the magic of colour, bringing a sense of joy and wonder into any space it inhabits.
