I create vibrant textile art composed of fabric and thread. Instead of traditional paint, I embrace the challenge of bringing scenes to life through meticulously cut and layered pieces of fabric.
The California coast, hummingbirds that visit my backyard, and the various flowers I cultivate are continual sources of inspiration.
When I observe a landscape, I envision it expressed with fabric. My aim is to capture the play of light and shadows and convey depth using textiles. The dynamic movement of the ocean, the intricate shadows cast on flowers, and the way light gently filters through trees inspire a desire to see the world through a different lens.
In my work, I use batik fabrics and at times, I dye my own fabric to achieve the precise hues needed. My creative process involves carefully cutting and layering these fabric pieces to form a visual canvas. Once the composition feels perfect, I use a sewing machine to sketch over the details, bringing the scene vividly to life with thread.
This technique enables me to produce artworks that are dense with texture and subtlety, revealing their intricate complexity upon closer examination. Through my art, I aim to offer viewers a moment of quiet contemplation and a chance to pause and see life through the lens of fabric.
