Sandcast Sculpture
- Sandcast sculpture
- Charles Faust
Sandcast Scuplture was installed in the Coronado Public Library in 1973, and moved to new Community Center in 2010.
The San Diego artist was Charles Faust Sr. He devised the technique of making a mold (from an original sculpture) in which he placed sand into a plaster filled mold with the result that the casting looked like it was made of sand.
This sandcasting was donated to the City of Coronado Community Center in October 2010 by The Morse Family, Park, Jeanne, Corinne, Connor and Guy “Pops” Dimichele.
The sand casting was commissioned by Jane Winn, a Library Trustee, in 1973 for the Coronado Library expansion of that time. It was donated in honor of her late son, Lt. Philip Sauer, who died in Vietnam.
The original donor plaque only had wording to the effect of “Donated by Jane Winn in Memory of Lt. Philip Sauer.” Charlie (1922-2000) and Rolfe Faust are two of San Diego’s most popular and well-known artists. They are best recognized for their superb bas-relief sandcast sculptures, drawings and watercolors.
