Red Eyes, Twilight Irises, Dawn Pupils, White Stars confronts street vouyuers along a historic surgical theatre in Iris Crepusculos Pupilas Madrugadas solo show at Thomas Jefferson University medical school, a fire coral red and flesh tone Mother Mold fertility effigy suspends from the ceiling with umbilical twisted, fuchsia drapery fabric nesting onto a backbone of coral, wrapped in serape textiles, preserved with plastic funerary flowers, woven palm fronds, cast coral, birth control pill packs, and Flan Boyan seed pods cast in domestic construction materials.
Architectural length serapes envelop the ceiling, windows and handrails emerging from a cast figure of foliage, flora and landscape debris to form a spiraling, grotesque fertility effigy. Levitating above the afterbirth of a sangria colored fabric cast into a Flora Aura painting of coral, palm fronds and twisted seed pods billowing onto the floor of the historic surgical theatre at the medical college. A reincarnated figure examines the institution's legacy through the Mother Mold monument and Flora Aura reconstruction of Thomas Eakins' Gross Medical Clinic painting commissioned by the University. Hovering above the stigmatized, sterilized university legacy, the Mother Mold monument renders the figure as a reliquary, levitating above the grotesque medical college history of operating on formerly enslaved cadavers. Intertwined shoe laces, little girl's petticoat lace and a metal coat hanger billows from Gross's white hand gripping the clay colored pregnant belly, are mournful signifiers of his pediatric sexual abuse. Heavy, twisting red fabric is textured and cast in figurative, scintillating glitter, darkened coffee grounds, soil and clay colored paint. The scarlet figure is interwoven into an amniotic braid; conjoined with an ascending, purple figure that balancing it with carnivalesque, fruitful and transcendent hues.
The Mother Mold monument cast of Lauren Bishop and Stevenson Dunn from Bedstuy Brooklyn, depicts the first family of Muslim faith to be cast in the Mama Spa Botanica workshop May 2023.
Viewable 24/7 in the Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine Helix Gallery storefront Iris Crepusculos y Pupilas Madrugadas (Twilight eyes & Dawn Pupils) — is a streetside sanctuary for pedestrians and pupils featuring works from Quipucamayoc artist Coralina Rodriguez Meyer’s Mama Spa Botanica project. An immersive installation mends medical wounds across bonded ancestries, geographies, bondaged diasporas, genders and generations. The works invite witnesses to transform white institutional walls into fabric cradled, fertile dwellings; to integrate reproductive and climate justice healing strategies as resistance technologies in documentary sculpture, photography and painting. Evidence of a trans-disciplinary movement lead by doulas, botanicas, healers, griots and advocates, the retablo offers Mother Mold monument fertility effigies, Linea Negra photographs and Foliage Obscura paintings in historic downtown Philadelphia.
