Hechizo Mar Mareada (Lauren Woodson & Stevenson Dunn Brooklyn) Dizzy Sea Spell is an oceanic spectrum fertility effigy welcoming and warning ferry passengers onto Governor's Island as a cobalt, indigo, cerulean, lapiz and azure adorned kinetic figure revolving within a Foliage Obscura retablo installation. Recalling the lifecycle traditions celebrated by Caribbean carnival, contemporary vernacular Birth Mask belly cast rituals and death mask casts from the French & Haitian Revolutions; the work offers an immersive sanctuary to rest & restore in preparation for Hurricane season. The viewer orbits around a fertility effigy whose textured surface is reminiscent of NASA footage from Hurricanes. Upon closer inspection, littoral litter and perished native species collected along the seashore by the artist, the cast family and their neighbors such as mussels, coral, mica stone and upcycled textiles, are cast into A Mother Mold monument. 

Collaboratively created in the Mama Spa Botanica workshop with the artist's neighbors, the fertility effigy is made of intimate waste and environmental ephemera collected along Rockaway Beach, Miami Beach, Bedstuy, Sunset Park and Little Caribbean. Encompassing the entropic environment and vibrant domestic interiors offering sanctuary to survivors of conflicting climate and reproductive health crisis in America, the installation is a documentary sculpture of a Black Muslim American Bedstuy family including Lauren Woodson (9 months pregnant) and her husband Stevenson Dunn's hand cast on May 31 2023 in the Artist's Brooklyn Necropolis studio during the Mama Spa Botanica in Sunset Park neighborhood near Greenwood Cemetary. 

MamaSpaBotanica project (2007-Present) is a full-spectrum cultural medicine workshop restoring dignity and divinity to vulnerable, yet unvanquished people, plants and hybrid habitats. Collaboratively created by, of and for LGBTQIA+BIPOC kin, the immersive installations are moving monuments to survivors of conflicting climate and reproductive health crisis who transgress structural violence in American mythology.
