How can art exist and be experienced in a garden? The boundaries and possibilities for art are constantly being redefined for outdoor, plant-filled spaces. AnkhLave created its Garden Project precisely to further its mission of representing BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) artists of color who are continuing the legacy of their cultural heritage through their contemporary art. The garden invites audiences to think beyond white cube galleries and dip into nature, rest their eyes, and be surprised not only by flowerings but also by art encounters.
In this 6th edition of the AnkhLave Garden Project, six artists’ works found a refuge in the hustle and bustle of New York City in a community garden tucked away in plain sight: The Artist Gardener NYC, located at 108-114 W 132nd Street, in Harlem. AnkhLave Arts Alliance welcomes you to its show, “Healing Hideaway,” which turns a garden visit into a healing oasis.
This show was curated by two former AnkhLave fellows turned curators, Cecilia André (curator) and Christine Stoddard (curator-in-residence). Dario Mohr is an artist and the founder and director of AnkhLave Arts Alliance. This exhibition project was made possible with funding from Lower Manhattan Cultural Council @lmcc_nyc
