After the US presidential election on November 14, 2020 a group of nationwide feminists gathered for a Stitch n Bitch (Care) arpillera salon for LGBTQIA+ healthcare visibility to create an arpillera in democratic fashion. A discussion hosted by drag performer and house mother Karla Croqueta, global health advocate Bryn Gay, and trans mental health expert Reverend Moonhawk Riverstone was moderated by artist Coralina Rodriguez Meyer, while branding expert Kevin Kedroe lead an image ideation critique to develop a democratically created image with dozens of participants. Afterwards, the donated women’s underwear were sewn by artist Coralina Rodriguez Meyer onto a stained Queen sized bedsheet based on the image created by the salon participants.
Spanning public policy, addiction and resilience training, global HIV initiatives, Trans & Drag House Motherhood, Queer economies, and direct action LGBTQIA+ community organizing, leaders Reverend Moonhawk Riverstone (NYC Mayor’s office on LGBTQIA+ rights), Miami House Mother & Drag Queen Karla Croqueta, and Bryn Gay (Treatment Action Group (formerly ACTUP), the discussion generated a critique of existing policies, imagery and stigmas surrounding LGBTQIA+ visibility, health and community care. The arpilleristas discussed creating a series of cohesive rings resembling resistance practices, professional survival strategies, and solidarity building in the LGBTQIA+ health community.
