Political Cartoon Collectors:
Steve Kelley for 2 decades was the brilliant political cartoonist of the San Diego Union Tribune illustrating by hand with pen and ink the issues of the day. (The last 2 decades it’s all done on computers).
We obtained 3 dozen of the best one-of-a-kind hand done works catching high points of history from O.J. and Kevorkian to antics of the Clintons.
Here are the steps Steve Kelley used by hand in the old fashioned process:
Step One - Kelley creates in blue pencil a rough original sketch.
Step Two - Kelley places the velum on the blue sketch to guide his pen and ink drawing on the velum.
Step Three - The velum image is then burned onto the chemically treated Bristol board where he will use a solution to create the shadows and dark areas completing the work for signature at the top.
Step Four - The completed image then goes to the presses.
Steve Kelley’s artwork touches memories of many of us of events in the past. Remember the Polly Klaas case? Or the fight by ACLU to tear down the Mt. Soledad Cross? These drawings are records, memories and historical reference to the things that have transpired in our society throughout the past two decades. In many cases you will see history repeat itself.
They are captured references to our world of Politics and Society of the past two decades laid out in an image and a few words, but making a lasting impression.
