Artist: Sara Drower (b. 1938)
Sara Drower first began her career at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she studied biology and scientific illustration. After many years teaching and illustrating, she turned to fine art, and started making detailed ink and watercolor drawings. After experimenting with "formed drawings," Drower moved to drawing and painting on fabric. Her work is characterized by organic themes. When Drower travels, she seeks out local craftsmen to learn about their craft and their culture. She has learned from people in China, Japan, Thailand, Australia, and Kenya.
Drower first puts together the surface design and the construction of the garment, then paints and draws on the fabric with permanent dyes. Then, she constructs the garment, which includes machine quilting and adding decorative elements to emphasize the garment structure.
