  • Artist: Mr. Imagination (1948-2012)

Mr. Imagination (born Gregory Wamack, 1948-2012) was a self-taught, African American artist whose work is most identified as "outsider art." Non-traditional in nature, his mixed media works reflect the artist's own personality and urban background. He used bottle caps to create thrones, ceremonial staffs, vests, and sculptures; industrial sized pieces of sandstone are the base for face carvings; and ordinary commercial paintbrushes are transformed into families of paintbrush people.

As a child growing up in Chicago, Mr. Imagination discovered an interest in art and a propensity for collecting discarded items that he incorporated into his work. In his early 30s, the artist sold his handmade jewelry out of neighborhood bars. After leaving one of his regular bars, he was mugged by a man he recognized from his neighborhood. He was shot twice in the stomach, and after waking from a coma found his calling as Mr. Imagination, turning his art into his life's work and helping children discover the artist within themselves.

In 2001, he relocated from Chicago to Bethlehem, PA, working with school and community groups through the Banana Factory. After eight years and a house fire that took the majority of his work and his beloved pets, he moved to Atlanta, GA to establish a community for other visionary artists.

Mr. Imagination, a prolific and intuitive artist, passed on May 30, 2012 following complications from a blood infection.
