This infrared photograph was taken at White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield, Connecticut in May 2023 after record rainfall submerged the boardwalk. The boardwalk would historically flood in late winter as a result of snowmelt, but due to extreme precipitation from January through April of that year, the boardwalk was impassable in this location. The flooding is made even more dramatic in this image by use of the camera’s infrared filter, which illuminates the clouds on the water below. Infrared can capture strong contrasts and reflections in clouds that the unaided eye cannot see. More evidence of our climate crisis in this photograph are the phragmites lining the boardwalk. This non-native plant proliferates even more from global warming and can then harm wetlands by crowding out native species and taking over as a monoculture of reeds, and disrupting the food web.
