This infrared photograph was taken on Tanner Hill Road in Warren, Connecticut on an oppressive summer day in late June 2024. While the scene is dazzling with luminous foliage, the leaden sky portends an imminent storm. The camera’s infrared filter captures the inflorescence of the foliage’s chlorophyll, creating a surreal glow. The sky above, the road, and any other surfaces not sunlit or filled with chlorophyll are dark in contrast with the bright plant forms. The artist employs the deep contrasts and false values possible in monochrome infrared to call attention to this severe weather, which has become a much more common occurrence.
