This infrared photograph was taken at Macricostas Preserve in Washington, Connecticut. As a nature photographer, the artist is fascinated with the constant interplay of light and shadow and often needs to act quickly to capture those dynamics. Like all artists, she works in dual modes: presenting an idea while at the same time constructing a strong abstract composition that will hold the viewer’s attention. That is especially true of this scene where the wind was moving the clouds rapidly. All at once, the clouds dropped a shadow into the center of the meadow to perfectly balance with the triangular slice of hillside at left. The photographer clicked the shutter right at this moment when all of the compositional elements would guide the viewer’s eye to and maintain attention in the scene. Furthering this interest is the photographer’s use of an infrared filter, which captures the glow emanating from photosynthesizing foliage and makes use of strong contrasts in the sky.
