This photograph was taken at Macricostas Preserve in Washington, Connecticut.
This meadow fascinates the artist because with a lack of trees, the sky dominates and reaches down to meet the wide open meadows and undulating hills. There are two small hills that symmetrically frame the meadow. On that particular day, the clouds stretched out like fingers across the vast expanse of the sky, emphasizing the realization that everything in the scene is greater than humanity. The artist’s use of infrared photography in this scene brings a strong contrast between the meadow grass and the sky. Infrared filters capture chlorophyll’s glow in photosynthesizing foliage, while clear blue skies read black. These strong contrasts, and the unusual values and strong contrasts can bring even more attention to a sublime scene such as this one.
