Angela Stewart has pursued an interest in portraiture for more than three decades, leading her to study the history of portraiture and its contemporary practice in both her Masters and Doctorate at Curtin University, Western Australia.

She is interested in the historical experiences of women, in this case, of women during the European Renaissance (1400 - 1700). In her recent work, she has used oval and circular frames to examine the traditional treatment of elements such as landscape and costume in Renaissance portraiture, and how these can conspire to aid the construction of identity in paintings. Angela is a senior Western Australian artist whose line and brushwork, over time, has dissolved to increasingly reveal the nature of paint itself and the processes of painting.
