Paul Kaptein's practice is an interrogation of time and space, often employing elements of glitch to explore notions of identity, systems and cultural connection across local and non-local trajectories.

Seeing the ocean as a global system of connection and great source of activity, mythology, narrative and transience, he was drawn to the Centaur shipwreck at the Marmion Reef as the reference point for this sculpture.

Utilizing traditional woodcarving techniques, this work references the figurehead and tattoos as signifiers of identity, constellations as systems of navigation, mythology and meaning and considers what, where and how is the relationship between external phenomenon, consciousness and bodily experience with space, place and ecologies.

This work was commissioned through the Visual Art Commission Program 2020-2021.
