‘Anima Mundi and the Ancestors’ is a highly symbolic painting referring to myths from Pagan times. Shirley Clancy explores the genesis of the appropriation of Pagan symbols by the Christians and Catholics in this work that is highly centred on the power of women in early religions.

Clancy states that Anima Mundi is the central figure in this work, representing wisdom and life. Her headdress wreath represents the virgin. In her arms are a bounty of fish, representing fertility and abundance. Flanked either side are the ancestors. The female figure represents the religious side and aspects of spirituality. The male figure represents war, administration and patriarchal system.
