Integrated into the Chattanooga Pier, “Luminous Light Masts” by artist and architect James Carpenter was one of three significant public art initiatives that developed out of the 21st Century Waterfront Project.
The Chattanooga vision for returning to the river was realized with the completion of the 21st Century Waterfront Project in 2005. The redevelopment of 129 acres along the river created multiple public spaces and opportunities for citizens to enjoy Chattanooga's waterfront. Integral to this redevelopment was a civic commitment to public art. With a budget of $1.2 million, competitions for public art were announced and commissioned artists from around the country to integrate public art into the riverfront. Two major permanent pieces were installed: The Passage and Luminous Light Masts for the Pier.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
“Seven delicate light masts emerge as luminous extensions of the pier's piling, embodying the Chattanooga river as they capture ambient light during the day and internal illumination at night. The masts are designed to maintain transparency and the fine stainless steel wire elements are oriented so that daylight from above and the artificial light from below is redirected to wash the walking surface directly, evoking the quality of light generated by the Tennessee River and thus enhancing pedestrians' connection to nature.” -Studio James Carpenter
