Chris James Cooper
Nexus, Georgian Bay by Chris James Cooper, Image 1.
By 2010, Chris had painted the Georgian Bay shoreline so many times that he knew it in his hands as much as his eyes. Nexus shows what that knowledge looks like when it’s set free — the pine, the granite, the sky reduced to pure gesture, colour, and movement. Of all the small canvases he made in his final months, this is the most abstract, and perhaps the most assured. The title — nexus, a point of connection — suggests what the painting enacts: the place where rock, tree, water, and sky meet and become one thing.
