A lone pine clings to a granite island, bent hard by Georgian Bay winds, its reflection caught in the stillness below. Painted in 2010 on a small canvas — one of a series Chris made in his final months, working quickly to get as much down as he could. The painting has the ease and confidence of someone who had drawn this same shoreline, from a canoe, countless times. Oil on canvas, 2010. A letter of authenticity from the estate is provided with this piece.

About This Collection

Chris James Cooper brought a rare combination to his landscape paintings — training as an ecologist and an architect, paired with a lifelong love of paint and light. His work was shown in several Ontario galleries during his lifetime, and reflects decades spent observing the natural world closely, both scientifically and artistically.
