Statement
My work consists of large-scale ink drawings. I slowly construct a scene through repetitive mark-making, working from multiple photographs of different elements, such as figures, nature, backgrounds, and lighting, which I often combine and reconfigure into my drawing. I depict a quiet, yet vibrant scene with subtle emotional complexity, which I aim to express in my work.
I work primarily with traditional Japanese Sumi ink. The ability to create tone variations and depth with diluted ink allows me to create both bold and delicate lines. Using a calligraphy pen and nibs, I slowly build layers of cross-hatching and free expressive strokes developed on large sheets of watercolor paper. The process is disciplined yet intuitive, and the accumulation of lines traces the movement of my vision. Grounded in a background in sculpture, I approach drawing as if it were a sculptural process—emphasizing scale to engage with forms, details, and textures on the surface. By focusing on light and shadow to create volume, the drawings achieve a strong sense of three-dimensionality and a dramatic, monumental presence.
