Inspired by Celtic motifs, I sketched my design for this wycinanki (a Polish traditional folk art of papercutting). Then, with graphite paper, three different parts of the design were transferred to three different colored papers. Using scissors and an exactor knife, I cut each of the design elements, which were quite fragile. By interlacing (and occasionally cutting through the design), the three separate pieces were woven together and carefully glued to the board. I then thinned out various gold colors of rub 'n buff and added the color to the board and the paper design. A black marker was used to enhance the paper's shadows.
Although my art can be described as eclectic, it shares common themes and is often inspired by nature, my travels, and experiences, and by my love of history. This piece was inspired by the art of two cultures – Polish wycinanki and a Celtic motif. The meaning of the centered rune is Dawn/A New Day.
