During the pandemic year of 2020, unable to travel to New Mexico for one of my usual snaphot-and-sketching trips, instead I have been poring over the Farm Security Administration depression-era photos of rural New Mexico. When working from iconic source material, I think it important to not seek out images with dynamic, individualistic compositions, but instead to work from photographs that are more loving, straight-on gazes. This unassuming church in Holman, NM (between Las Vegas, NM and Taos), photographed by the great Russell Lee, enchanted me.
