Charlie Hunter is a cheerful guy who paints drippy portraits of decaying American infrastructure in Bellows Falls, Vermont.
MessageDuring the pandemic year of 2020, unable to travel to New Mexico for one of my usual snaphot-and-sketching trips, instead I have been poring over the Farm Security Administration depression-era photos of rural New Mexico. When working from iconic source material, I think it important to not seek out images with dynamic, individualistic compositions, but instead to work from photographs that are more loving, straight-on gazes. This unassuming church in Holman, NM (between Las Vegas, NM and Taos), photographed by the great Russell Lee, enchanted me.
