Chantal Hediger
Schmerikon
Swiss contemporary painter exploring coexistence through organic forms and spatial structures, where landscape, architecture, and inner worlds meet.
MessageChantal Hediger (b. 1974 in Aarau, Switzerland) is a contemporary painter based in Schmerikon, Switzerland. Working primarily with acrylic, oils and oil pastel on raw cotton fabric. She is best known for compositions in which organic forms, botanical fragments, and landscape-like elements intersect with linear structures and spatial constructs. Her paintings often oscillate between interior and exterior worlds—suggesting rooms, gardens, and man-made environments simultaneously - while vibrant, saturated color palettes and softly layered surfaces create a visual language that merges natural abundance with human-imposed order.
At the core of her practice lies an ongoing inquiry into coexistence—how elements that do not naturally belong together can share space, interact, and transform one another. Within her paintings, organic forms, color fields, and spatial structures meet without hierarchy, allowing tension and contrast to remain present while gradually unfolding into a fragile balance. Rather than resolving difference, her work explores how contrast can become generative—how proximity and sensitivity enable each element to retain its integrity while contributing to a larger whole. Influenced by Japanese aesthetic philosophies and the notion of “reading the air,” her paintings engage with the relational, the atmospheric, and the in-between. Painting becomes a site where sensory experience, intuition, and structure converge, inviting a heightened awareness of presence and inner experience.
Chantal Hediger’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at Museum/Kunstraum Zeitfalten in Uznach; Galerie Bachlechner in Bergdietikon; Galerie le Sud in Zürich; the Marlene Yu Museum in Shreveport; and the Gebert Stiftung für Kultur/Alte Fabrik in Rapperswil. Her works are held in the Rainforest Art Foundation and the Marlene Yu Museum in the USA, as well as in the corporate collections of Baupool Baumanagement GmbH in Zürich and the Raiffeisenbank Aarau-Lenzburg, alongside numerous private collections worldwide. She has participated in the Brewery ARTWALK in Los Angeles, ART Innsbruck, Kunstmesse Salzburg, Immagina ARTE in Fiera in Bologna, and Frauen im Bundeshaus in Bern.
Statement
My work explores the interplay between organic growth and human-made structure. Through vivid, saturated color palettes and layered surfaces, I create compositions in which botanical fragments, abstracted landscapes, and architectural lines converge. These spaces often oscillate between interior and exterior—rooms that open into gardens, landscapes that fold into constructed forms—reflecting the fluid relationship between environment, memory, and inner experience.
At the core of my practice lies an inquiry into coexistence—how elements that do not naturally belong together can share space, interact, and transform one another. I am interested in the tension between contrast and harmony, and in how difference can become generative rather than divisive. Influenced by Japanese aesthetic philosophies and the notion of “reading the air,” my work engages with the relational and the atmospheric, giving form to what is sensed rather than seen.
My process unfolds as an open dialogue between intuition and structure. I work in layers, allowing traces of earlier stages to remain visible, creating depth and complexity within the surface. Working in series, particularly in Places of Abundance, enables me to continuously expand my visual language and deepen my exploration of how painting can hold both the physical and the intangible—inviting the viewer into a space where presence, experience, and inner awareness meet.
