Originally from San Diego, California, I have a BA in Fine Art, with a minor in Art History, from the University of San Diego. I’ve worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, and the San Diego Art Center and Wita Gardener Gallery (both of which are sadly no longer in business). I moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1990 and worked at the Mattress Factory, an installation art museum, and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art.
I’ve spent most of my career working as an arts administrator but have always continued my creative practice through drawing, painting, designing, or making. I’m proud to call Greensboro my new hometown and serve on the board of Reconsidered Goods and Co-Chair of the Development Committee for Elsewhere. I was recently appointed as a member of the Greensboro Cultural Affairs Commission and will be teaching at UNCG in Spring 2022 as part of the Arts Administration Program.
When I was growing up we never hired a repair person because my father could fix just about anything. That didn’t always mean they were pretty to look at, but he fixed them. That is where my mother came in. She was an artist. So, when the enamel on our 25-year-old refrigerator started to chip away, my mother painted yellow roses to cover up the spots. When the interior of our car started to fade and rip from age, my mother connected each tear with painted vines and leaves. Our patio and walkways were covered with dots that made the cracks and concrete fillers seem less noticeable, almost playful. Even the fire hydrant in front of our house was painted a patriotic red, white, and blue. Art improved my quality of life and provided a sense of well-being. My mother was also a maker from a long lineage of sewists. I fell far from the tree and am only now teaching myself to sew. Matching colors and patterns reminds me of long afternoons spent in fabrics shops with my mother. I use only repurposed fabric and sew small useful things, donating 25% of sales to a local charity. I sew in honor of my parents.
