Cathy Mevik is an expressive abstract artist creating raw, intuitive paintings, exploring emotion, depth, and personal expression through layers and markmaking.
MessageCathy Mevik is an expressive abstract artist and mentor based on the outskirts of Oslo, Norway. What began as a personal search for creative fulfillment soon became a deeper journey, one of processing emotions, connecting with her inner world, and ultimately, helping others do the same.
Driven by a profound need for self-expression, Cathy was drawn to the freedom and emotional depth of abstract painting. She works intuitively with acrylic, charcoal, and pastels, embracing layers, mark-making, and spontaneity to create paintings that feel raw, authentic, and deeply personal. She believes that mistakes and imperfections are not obstacles but essential elements of a powerful and meaningful painting.
Beyond her own artistic practice, Cathy is passionate about guiding other artists toward confidence and self-discovery. Through her online courses and mentoring, she helps artists move past fear and perfectionism, teaching them how to create with both knowledge and freedom.
For Cathy, painting is more than just a process, it’s a way of being. Through her art, she hopes to create a deep emotional resonance with her viewers, inviting them to see reflections of themselves within her work.
Statement
My work is deeply influenced by my past—by the experiences that have shaped me and the emotions that color my life. I believe emotions give depth to our existence, adding texture to both joyful and painful moments.
To me, art is the visual language of emotions. When I paint, I am honest, fearless, and spontaneous. Perfectionism has no place in my process—mistakes are embraced as essential elements that bring life and interest to my work.
I work intuitively with acrylic and charcoal, layering, scratching, and revealing marks in an energetic dialogue with the canvas. I love the rawness of charcoal strokes, some hidden beneath layers, others left exposed like memories resurfacing. Whether on large canvases or paper, my process is guided by movement, texture, and the interplay of the unexpected.
I hope my paintings reveal fragments of who I am and reflect the emotions I felt as they emerged. My deepest wish is that they resonate with you—that somewhere in the layers, the textures, and the marks, you find a connection that speaks to your own story.
