Statement
Watercolour artist Cathy Earle was born in Sarnia, Ontario. Having pursued an artistic and creative life since she was young, she graduated from the Art Fundamentals Program at Lambton College and continued to hone her skills at Sheridan College in the Illustration program. Thereafter, she attended the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD), graduating with a Fine Arts Degree in 1992.
Cathy has been awarded over 10 grants through the Ontario Arts Council in conjunction with numerous shows in the Sarnia area. She has also shown her work in Whitby, Port Hope, and Toronto, at venues such as the John B. Aird Gallery and the Wagner Rosenbaum Gallery. Having been a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (1996-2000) her work is featured in the Diploma Collection at the Rodman Hall Arts Centre St.Catharines, Ontario.
Although watercolour is her specialty, she also enjoys painting with gouache, oils and acrylics. Cathy is drawn to images that are vibrant, lush, and dramatic; many of her compositions juxtapose natural forms with geometric patterns. Patterns and texture as well as shadows and reflections, are common themes in her paintings. Cathy has a keen eye for rich colour and dynamic compositions, with a focus on how the subjects relate to each other.
Outside of the studio, Cathy enjoys teaching and sharing her signature technique with her students using a limited palate of three primary colours to keep things fresh and vibrant!
