I focus on representational oil painting that often involves people being themselves and presenting them in a way that triggers memories for the viewer.
MessageThere are large doors, like gateways at the entrance to the yard surrounding the Governor's Palace. There is an interpreter stationed at each open gate to check that those who enter all have a pass. Every time we have visited there have been different folks doing this job. Colonial Williamsburg is mainly "populated" by regular folks and not well-to-do ladies, so you only see a few in the fancy gowns as this interpreter was dressed. I wanted to emphasize the enormity of the doors against the diminutive lady even as she was dressed in a very wide gown. I included the flag as a reminder that despite having been settled as a Colony of Britain, Colonial Williamsburg is a very vivid reminder of our search for independence away from monarchy and oligarchy. The flag, in this case, is bigger than the wealthy.
