In the heart of the vibrant Philip S. Miller Park stands "Beginnings," a bronze sculpture that not only captures the essence of two remarkable individuals but also invites passersby to sit and reflect on the legacy they left behind.
Created by the esteemed local artist Robert Allison in 2015, this work of art pays homage to the beloved philanthropists Philip S. Miller and his wife, Jerry.
The sculpture is a tender, life-sized portrayal of the Millers in their youth, seated together on a carefully crafted rhyolite culvert spanning a tranquil stream. The culvert, stretching six feet in length and standing eighteen inches high, serves as a symbolic foundation, echoing the Millers' enduring dedication to the town's water rights. Etched into the culvert is a carving of the town's namesake rock, accompanied by a written history of the Millers' impactful contributions.
Jerry Miller, seated gracefully beside Jerry, rests her hands on a book. This detail is a nod to the couple's unwavering support for the local library, reflecting their passion for knowledge and community enrichment.
The design of "Beginnings" is intentionally interactive, encouraging visitors to sit on the culvert wall alongside the Millers. This interactive element creates a sense of connection between the past and present, inviting people to engage with the sculpture in a personal and meaningful way.
As you sit beside the bronze figures, you can almost hear the soft murmur of the stream below, a reminder of the lifeblood the Millers ensured would flow through the town. The presence of the Millers, immortalized in bronze, serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact they had on the community, inspiring future generations to continue their legacy of generosity and civic duty.
"Beginnings" is more than just a sculpture; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of philanthropy and the lasting bond between a couple and their beloved town. Through Allison's masterful artistry, the Millers' story is told not just in words and stone, but in the hearts and minds of all who pause to sit and reflect on their extraordinary lives.
