Casey Thornton
Narrogin, WA
Emerging visual artist based in Narrogin, Western Australia, predominantly working in the field of figurative oil painting.
MessageBorn in Katanning, Casey Thornton completed her schooling in Narrogin before studying a Bachelor of Fine Art at Curtin University. Having returned to Narrogin in recent years, she has most recently exhibited work in the curated group exhibition ‘The Alternative Archive: Common Ground’ at NEXIS.
Ms Thornton has been developing a body of artwork over the past ten months during a Creative Grid emerging artist mentorship that has seen her working under the guidance of established local artist and educator Karen Keeley.
‘Quietude’ showcases approximately 25 figurative oil paintings developed by Ms Thornton during the mentorship, and is accompanied by time-lapse video offering insight into the time intensive processes involved in creating the artworks.
In October, Ms Thornton was announced to be one of four regional artists to receive a grant through Country Arts WA’s innovative Next Level YCulture Regional program and was also supported to attend Artlands Victoria, a biennial event focussed on regional arts in Australia.
This mentorship has offered Ms Thornton a fabulous opportunity to extend her artistic practice and build practical experience in exhibition development. It is one of fifty mentorships arising from the state-wide Connect to the Creative Grid project, an unprecedented collaborative initiative empowering and enlivening regional WA communities through art.
Following her debut solo exhibition, Ms Thornton will be attending a 5 day intensive oil painting workshop in Adelaide before creating new works for a solo exhibition at the Vancouver Arts Centre in Albany, which has been scheduled for January 2020.
Statement
Quietude can be defined as a state of stillness and calm held within a person or place; a freedom from storm or disturbance. The subjects of these introspective and often ethereal portraits are captured in a momentary pause between actions, in quiet contemplation and brief respite from the anxieties of daily life.
