Inside the Carnation was the result of my obsession with a photograph my friend had taken. The subtle color shifts, the overlapping shapes, the warms and cools called to me. I got her permission to paint it, then zoomed in and cropped the image to create my composition. First, I lightly outlined the structure, then sculpted the petals with oil and cold wax. I hope it will help the viewer slow down. Life is not a race, and beauty surrounds us if we stop long enough to see it. The colors and shapes inside the carnation were meditative to paint. My reference photo was taken by a friend who is also obsessed with the beauty of flowers, Kitty Munger.
