Carol Stirton-Broad
Elkins Park, PA
Carol Stirton-Broad loves to combine her knowledge of ceramic and glass techniques in her mosaic practice.
MessageAfter earning a BFA in ceramics from Tyler School of Art, Carol began studying mosaic and glass techniques. She embraces the practice of mixed media mosaic and is discovering the joys of silk screening both on clay and paper. Until recently she maintained a full teaching schedule in Philadelphia, working at Fleisher Art Memorial, the Maine Line Art Center, Abington Art Center, and in her own studio. Carol also managed to take a lot of workshops. She has attended courses at Orsoni in Venice, Italy, the Scuola Art del Mosaico in Ravenna, Italy, and at the Chicago Mosaic School.
As much as she enjoys teaching, learning new techniques, and making art, she also enjoys sharing her practice and participates in exhibitions frequently. Two of her favorites were at Philadelphia’s Magic garden, where she participated in the group show Shattering Expectations (2014) and followed that up with a solo show, Carol Stirton-Broad:Collections in 2015. In 2021 she exhibited at the Andamento Studio and Gallery in Baltimore Maryland.
She was a a founding member of the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia and is a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists.
Statement
I began my artistic life as a photographer but now study the art of mosaics, working in both modern and traditional styles. I also love to create in three dimensions, making objects with fibers, clay, and glass. In my own practice I am always interested in the exploration of new techniques and materials but find that the behavior of light - reflected, absorbed, created, and recreated is the theme that I return to most frequently.
