This painting is part of a series where I wanted to focus on creating a portrait-like setting for animal subjects, using a Renaissance type setting with a distant landscape.
Like other works of mine, I'm also interested in exploring contrasts and symbolism in this painting. In this painting, for example, there is a contrast between the realistically painted crow and the line art illustration of a mallow plant.
Symbolically, mallow is a plant that associated with protection and healing, often a reminder of resilience due to its ability to survive.
Crows are highly intelligent, adaptable birds that are found in myths and legends in numerous cultures, which also gives them varied symbolic meaning. Overall, the painting serves as a reminder of resilience, as the title suggests.
