I saw this Indian elephant at a large county fair I happened to be at while visiting family. This elephant, along with an African elephant, were part of a "show" that was billed as educational, however, they still performed tricks for an audience and later charged for rides. I don't know if elephants feel emotions like sadness or hope in the same way we do, but there was a kind of sadness and resiliency in the eyes of this elephant. To me, it seemed very much a metaphor for the fate of elephants as a whole.
