I saw this Indian elephant at a large county fair I happened to be at while visiting family. The elephant was there with an African elephant and while part of the "show" was meant to be educational, they still performed tricks for an audience and later charged for rides. I don't know if elephants feel emotions like sadness or hope in the same way we do, but there was a kind of sadness and resiliency in the eyes of this elephant. To me, it seemed very much a metaphor for the fate of elephants as a whole.
