COLORADO WORK 2021
This is work I created while camping with Wilbur in Colorado this past August. All of the work was created on location.
DRAWINGS
I draw a lot. Many of my drawings are finely rendered studies of objects, usually within the category of a still life. Objects arranged on a table. I also do a lot of drawing outside. Many times these are created while I am camping. Other drawings are studies for paintings or just ideas I’m exploring. I utilize traditional drawing materials such as pastels, pencils, ink and watercolor.
I view drawing as a process rooted in meditation. I’m quiet when I draw, my mind settles and I become the subject of my study.
EVERYWHERE EVERYTHING
I call these my "Everywhere/Everything" series. Not sure why I'm calling them that except they have a kind of trippyness about them. I feel like I'm looking out at the landscape and seeing it full and with wonder. So these are water, sky, field, land, forest. My influences for them are, of course, Charles Burchfield but also Rembrandt. I saw a show of his landscape drawings many years ago. They were these small horizontal gems that seemed to be about everything and everywhere. They were tiny but infinitesimal. I've always wanted to make something like those and these are my attempt. Oh, and Turner. I forgot about Turner. The Turner exhibition I saw in San Francisco a couple years ago had a huge impact on me.
MEMORY OF WATER
The Memory of Water series is based on a one-month artist residency I was part of in September of 2012. I spent it working out on an island forty miles off the coast of Maine. It was transformative and inspired a whole new way of working.
MN MAGICAL LANDSCAPES
The Magical Landscape series is based on the landscape of Minnesota and Wisconsin. This series evokes the land and natures magical qualities. It is a series that is abstract, representational and poetically evocative.
