To me, the strong, linear composition established by the substrate speaks to a sense of speed and progress while the very subtle repeat pattern on the sheer fabric adhered to it adds a sense of weightless effervescence. This is furthered by the vertical bands of white and gold, while the deep, iridescent blue and violets ground the work, adding just a touch of aristocratic revelry. That is to say, when I look at this piece, I’m propelled five hundred years into the future, where it is displayed in a very exclusive VIP lounge on a luxury spaceship. Tonight, the bourgeoisie in the velveteen booth beneath this painting are wearing white 1920’s flapper dresses, and drinking champagne out of elegant crystal glasses while they dance to the Beastie Boys’ “Intergalactic”.
Such a florid description of my interpretation of this work highlights the fact that the associations I create when I look at this work are likely drastically different from yours, and to stress the point that here, after the work is finished, I too play the role of the viewer, and my interpretation of the work can only be made to define yours if you choose for it to do so, through your own volition. Should you so choose, you are welcome to join me and those flappers in a revelrous toast to “another dimension”, or to delight in your own, independent imagination, set free to run upon the open field that is a work of art.
