This is part of a series of ten small paintings that I made all at the same time in the following sizes: six 11 x 8.5 inches on textured polypropylene (Yupo), one 14 x 11 inches on gessobord, one 16 x 12 inches on watercolor paper, one 16 x 12 inches on canvas, and one 40 x 26 inches on textured polypropylene.
This one has some nice discordant energy to it. The thick dark brushstrokes sit awkwardly between the delicate watercolor washes in the background and ethereal poured paint in shades of sky blue. That watercolor paper background is such a bright bright white. Yet, it all seems to come together. I love the little spots of orange that come through in the arching brushstrokes of watercolor in the background, in the upper right, mid-upper left, and down there in the lower right corner muddled up and surrounded by yellow and punctured by blue.
