This is part of a series of ten small paintings that I made all at the same time in the following sizes: six 11 x 8.5 inches on textured polypropylene (Yupo), one 14 x 11 inches on gessobord, one 16 x 12 inches on watercolor paper, one 16 x 12 inches on canvas, and one 40 x 26 inches on textured polypropylene.

There is a lot of blue in this painting, like a tangled tsunami or a whirlpool with everything getting sucked into it and thrown out of it at the same time. This painting technique involves meticulously building up several layers of different kinds of mark making. I've got broad brushstrokes of watercolor in the background in reds and yellows, various layers of pattern making in marker and brushwork, and a couple small pours and smeared areas. Then it all comes down to the top layer of poured paint, which is the watery aqua-blue-white layer on top where there is the potential to just obliterate everything underneath and there is a real moment of trust in pouring that top layer that it will work out and that it won't destroy all the work that had gone into the underlying layers. It's a combination of confidence, bold action, and delicate moments that come together in this piece and makes you want to be drawn into its vortex.
