Bernadette Youngquist
Fort Collins, CO
Bernadette Youngquist is a contemporary abstract painter based in Colorado.
MessageFor Bernadette, the process is as important as the final product. Simultaneously, she is repeatedly drawn to a language of spaciousness, soft geometric shapes, improvisational lines, and bold compositions.
Bernadette did not pursue a formal education in Fine Art and instead chose a path of self-study and many hours of practice. Being part of a larger community of artists has contributed greatly to her education.
As a child she often observed subtleties and nuances about life that others overlooked. As an adult she gained deeper insight into her sensitivity and found that painting was a place where this was an advantage. She uses her acute awareness in the subtle choices she makes in her artwork. Her paintings are where her authentic self can emerge.
Bernadette’s work has been juried into local, national, and international exhibits. She continues to discover her path as an artist and bravely cast her net in many directions with the belief that her artwork will find its way to those who wish for more connectivity in their lives.
Statement
What is it that I seek to express through my art? It is the intangible experience of spirit. It is the awareness of the big picture. It is about the meaning of life and connection to self and others. I am exploring and expressing an inner experience though abstract images. I paint images that feel solid and spacious which is how I feel when I am experiencing “presence”.
I have always felt the subtleties of life whether it was observing beauty in nature or man-made, overcoming difficult challenges, and the complexities of the human experience. I process these subtleties through mixed media acrylic painting.
I initially spend time on expressive studies and when I have found a visual language I produce many paintings from that one insight. For example my last series was about the Art of Balance. I found over 20 ways to express that idea with one varied and experimental visual language. That series has evolved into a new idea with subtle differences in the techniques.
What I hope to accomplish with my artwork is to engage others in the idea of what is truly meaningful about our time here on earth. I hope to inspire people to feel more connected to that part of themselves which in turn allows people to better connect with others in a respectful if not reverent way.
