The vintage boats of Glacier National Park offer up a nostalgic way to see the park, from multiple locations and boating experiences. I paint in the park nearly every summer and have attempted to paint them from the shore. A fun subject, but the boats depart often and I was left with a good start and no boat. So instead I waited for just the right picture for this wonderful old boat to be painted in the studio.
This particular boat is named Joy II, hence the name of the painting. According to the boat's website, it originally operated out of Waterton, Canada, in support of the Prince of Wales Hotel. In 1986, it was transported across the border to St. Mary Lake, where it has remained ever since.
To see the rich history of the boats visit Glacier Park Boat Company, a third generation owned company that works hard to maintain its fleet.
