Artist: Sharon Elliot Thomas
Sharon is a Christian, Louisiana visual artist born in Baton Rouge. She has served as an Artist Roster of the Greater Baton Rouge Arts Council, and was previously a Roster Artist for the State of Louisiana’s Division of the Arts. With the Arts Council, Sharon taught in schools and summer programs under grants written by schools and organizations. She currently a volunteer art instructor with the G.E.M.S. (Girls Enrichment Mentoring Services) program through her church. She is a painter, and professional photographer. Sharon is a member of the National Black Female Photographer’s group where her work has been featured in its publications. She is currently creating a photographic journey of rural Louisiana and has several photo books in the works. She hopes to set up a nonprofit one day using art auctions to fund medical procedures and research.
Sharon studied fine arts, painting and drawing at LSU, the University of Southern California, and Los Angeles Valley College. She takes special interest in encouraging and teaching others to express themselves through art, and considers it one of the earliest forms of communication. She also believes that encouraging self-confidence, unlimited imagination, and artistic creativity in others is where her gifts and passions intersect. Sharon holds true to the belief that “Everyone is an artist, everyone has a creative gift, but most have not identified it yet.”
