Artist: Leah Schwartzman
A native of Louisiana, Leah Schwartzman is a mostly self-taught artist, who grew up in a small
rural town in west central Louisiana that did not have a school art program or any art
opportunities in the surrounding area. Leah savs she has been an "artist" at heart and as long as
she can remember, she has had a crayon, pencil or paint brush in her hand.
A resident of Baton Rouge since 1977, Leah began pursuing her life-long dream of "becoming an
artist' in 2009; after raising a family and retiring from a 31 year career as a Louisiana state
employee. She has since become active in local art organizations and has taken studied art with
nationally recognized artists such as Judi Betts, Mort Solberg, Paul Jackson, Kim Santini and
several others by taking Guild sponsored workshops.
She served on the Board of the Art Guild of Louisiana since 2009, including 4 years (2 terms) as
President. She is also a member of the Louisiana Watercolor Society and previously a member of
Associated Women in the Arts. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions including, the
Brush with Burden Art Show, the Baton Rouge Art League show and was juried into the National
River Road Art Show in 2015 and in 2022. Her art has won several local and regional awards.
After years of painting with acrylics for fun, she fell in love with watercolor the first time she tried
it in 2009 and has primarily worked in watercolor ever since. Any subject that speaks to her is
fair game; from florals, to landscapes to marvelous cultural subjects from her rich Louisiana
heritage and her travels. Her philosophy about art is not complicated.…paint what you love, thing
that make you "feel" and people will love what you create. She says that creating art "brings her
to that meditative state of mind that knows no time"
